    Notice of Scoliosis Screening
    Health Services

The State of Texas has mandated that all girls ages 10 and 12 years old be screened for scoliosis. Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14. Scoliosis is not a disease. It is an abnormal curvature of the spine which appears in children during the years of rapid growth, usually pre-teenage and teenage years.
All students must remove their shirts for this exam. For this reason, we request that girls wear a halter top, tube top, sports bra, or a two piece swim suit top underneath their shirts on exam day. The screenings will be done individually and discretely maintaining privacy for all students. The school nurse will perform a visual examination and a scoliometer may lightly touch the child’s back to measure his or her spine. This screening only takes about 2 minutes.
If you receive a referral from the school nurse, please make an appointment with your child’s physician for a complete exam of his/her spine and return the referral information to the school nurse.
This is a state mandated, required screening. You may choose to have your child evaluated by his/her physician for this screening. If your child is seen by their physician, please return the exam results to your school nurse for state reporting. Screening dates by campus are listed below:

Dubose and Memorial - November 6
    William Adams - November 9
    Elementary schools - November 13
Alice High School - November 15
